She has over 10 years of experience in the internet industry, including system administration and web development work at Firefly Inc., iCast Corporation (a CMGi company) and most recently at Northeastern University.

Leila Amerling, MBA has joined the team as an Administrative Associate and Program Coordinator. Leila previously worked in the Education and Finance industries. She received her MBA in Germany in 2007, with a double specialization in Innovations and Strategy & Organization.

Jeff Andre

Jeff is a research software developer at the Children’s Hospital Informatics Program, and recently graduated from Boston University, Metropolitan College with an MS in Computer Science. He worked at BU as a graduate research assistant developing web applications for the MET Health Informatics Lab. He also has a BSEE and worked as an applications engineer in the networking semiconductor industry.

Yuki Ara

Yuki joined the HealthMap group in 2012 to develop and curate the Japanese feed. She is currently a MPH candidate in Boston University School of Public Health with a concentration in Epidemiology.  She is interested in infectious disease surveillance, prevention and early detection of disease outbreaks.

Chi is pursuing her master’s degree in Global Health at the Harvard School of Public Health, with special interests in emerging infectious disease surveillance and policy. She has a background in biology and business management, and joined HealthMap in March 2012 as the MoH+ feed developer and curator.

Corey Benedum, MPH, is currently a PhD student at the Boston University School of Public Health studying epidemiology. Corey joined HealthMap in 2013 where he worked on developing a novel framework for digitally detecting the drivers for disease outbreaks. He is interested in the application of new data sources for epidemiologic research and public health surveillance.

John Brownstein's picture
John Brownstein

John Brownstein is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, and has joint appointments in the Children's Hospital Boston Informatics Program and Division of Emergency Medicine. He was trained as an epidemiologist in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at Yale University where he received his PhD. Dr. Brownstein works on novel statistical modeling and medical informatics approaches for accelerating the translation of public health surveillance research into practice.

Rachel joined the HealthMap team in 2012 as a Front-end Web Developer and Graphic Designer. Prior to working at HealthMap Rachel worked as a Web Interface Designer at Northeastern Unversity and as an English Teacher in China.

Rumi Chunara's picture
Rumi Chunara

Rumi Chunara, PhD is an Instructor at HealthMap and Harvard Medical School with a background in building biological sensors. Rumi is particularly interested in information obtained from sensors and how it can be used to augment health care. She is trained as an engineer and her doctoral studies were through the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology. She also has gained clinical experience at hospitals in Pakistan, Kenya and the US.

Michael Close joined the HealthMap team as a curator for the Spanish feed. He graduated University of Massachusetts at Amherst with a BA in Social Thought and Political Economy. Following graduation, he served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ecuador. He is currently a Master's student in Society, Human Development, and Health at Harvard School of Public Health.

Emily Cohn

Emily received her MPH in Epidemiology from Boston University. She has a background working in veterinary medicine and municipal health departments. Emily joined the HealthMap team in 2013 working primarily on zoonotic disease data. She can now be found helping on many grant-funded projects and research. Outside of public health, she enjoys running, and painting.

Clark is a Research Software Developer at the Children's Hospital Informatics Program and a PhD student in Boston University's Biomedical Engineering department. He studied Computer Science and Mathematics at Yale University, and has over ten years of experience developing feature-rich Web applications. His interests include Web-based user-interface design, data visualization, text mining, and technologies for developing countries.

Sheryl Gordon, MSc, is working as a researcher at HealthMap while studying for a PhD in Epidemiology at the Boston University School of Public Health. She is interested in infectious disease prevention in resource-poor settings, and transmission patterns of vector-borne diseases.

Jared Hawkins, PhD is a Research Fellow at Boston Children's Hospital and a National Library of Medicine Research Fellow in Biomedical Informatics at Harvard Medical School. His background is in Immunology and Bioinformatics. Jared joined the HealthMap team because he is passionate about utilizing novel health data sources to better understand population health and the spread of disease, and to assist clinicians in improving the quality of patient care.

Jane Huston

Jane Huston, MPH joined HealthMap in 2011 as a program coordinator. In addition to writing and editing for the Disease Daily, she manages the HealthMap Vaccine Finder, a project that aims to simplify getting vaccinated. Her professional interests include global health, infectious disease, and immunization. Jane received a Master's of Public Health in International Health from the Boston University School of Public Health.

Taha A. Kass-Hout

Taha is a recognized leader and has more than 15 years of professional experience in health, public health, and informatics. Taha received a master of science (MS) degree from the University of Texas, School of Public Health, Department of Biostatistics and has a medical doctor (MD) degree from the University of Texas health Sciences Center at Houston. Taha also completed clinical training at Harvard's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Houston.

Maia Majumder

Maimuna (Maia) Majumder is an Engineering Systems PhD student at MIT. Before coming to MIT, she earned a Bachelors of Science in Engineering Science and a Masters of Public Health in Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Tufts University. Her research interests involve probabilistic modeling, Bayesian statistics, and “shoe-leather” epidemiology in the context of emerging infectious diseases. She also enjoys exploring novel techniques for data procurement, writing about data for the general public, and creating meaningful data visualizations.

Sumiko Mekaru, DVM, PhD, MPVM, MLIS is a veterinarian and epidemiologist interested in environmental factors contributing to infectious disease outbreaks. She is a Research Fellow and oversees HealthMap's operations, including several grants, partnerships, and our intern program.

Adham Abdel Mottalib

Adham received his medical degree from Cairo University, Egypt and currently works as a researcher at Joslin Diabetes Center. He joined the HealthMap team in 2012 to help monitor disease outbreaks in the MENA region. He moved to the US seeking a career in medicine a few months after the January 25 revolution. He still works with several NGO's that help in the development of his homeland. Taking part in the events that took place in Tahrir Square made him believe more than ever in the power of dreams. On a personal level, Adham is an avid reader and loves playing Sudoku!

Elaine Nsoesie is a Research Fellow at HealthMap and Harvard Medical School. Elaine is trained as a Statistician and Computational Epidemiologist through the Virginia Tech interdisciplinary program in Genetics, Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. Her interests include assessing novel data sources for disease surveillance, infectious disease modeling and forecasting, global health and writing.

Marjorie Odegard

Marjorie Odegard is an undergraduate at Harvard University. She will be graduating with a degree in Social Anthropology and a minor in Spanish in May 2013. She joined HealthMap as an intern in the summer of 2012 and is currently working on a project about food-borne illness reporting with CDC. Marjorie is also pre-med and hopes to enter medical school in the Fall of 2014. She is interested in how cultural upbringing affects people's interaction with healthcare systems and hopes to also eventually earn an MPH and do some medical work in a Spanish speaking country

Alejandra Ramirez-Cardenas

Alejandra is an MPH candidate at Boston University School of Public Health, she joined Health map in 2016 as a Spanish language curator working primarily with Zika, Dengue, and Chikungunya data. She has a background in molecular research and environmental health; she’s particularly interested in the effect of chemical exposures and adverse health outcomes, such as cancer, and the environmental determinants of disease. Before coming to Boston, Alejandra completed a B.S. degree at Texas A&M University and spent time in Houston,Texas conducting genetic cancer research.

Mauricio Santillana

Mauricio is a faculty member at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and a research associate at the Harvard School of Public Health. He joins the  Boston Children's Hospital Informatics Program as a Scientific Research Associate. He is a physicist and applied mathematician with a strong passion to create mathematical models that leverage big data sets to produce timely epidemiological information aimed at supporting public health decision makers.

David Scales, MD, PhD joined the HealthMap team as a CDC contractor after completing degrees in medicine and sociology from Yale University. He is particularly interested in socioeconomic factors that increase people's vulnerability to disasters and infectious diseases, a topic he will explore in a joint project with HealthMap, the CDC and BioDiaspora.

Katharina joined Healthmap in 2011 as a curator for the German feed and contributing author to the Disease Daily. She recently graduated with her MPH in International Health from Boston University's School of Public Health. Her interests include global reproductive health, science writing, US Healthcare reform, and biking. She has experience implementing youth empowerment programs in Nicaragua and researching access to health services among socioeconomically and culturally diverse populations in the US.

She joined HealthMap in 2015 as a curator for Neglected Tropical Diseases, and has worked on Yelp Foodborne surveillance and Twitter ILI surveillance. She is currently working on a patient experiences grant project using Twitter. When she isn't working, she enjoys traveling and reading.

Amy Sonricker, MPH is a Research Coordinator for the HealthMap Project with a background as an epidemiologist specializing in vector-borne and zoonotic diseases. Her interests include increasing disease surveillance for emerging infectious diseases in resource-poor areas, utilization of syndromic surveillance, and the impact of climate change on infectious disease trends.

Anna Tomasulo's picture
Anna Tomasulo

Anna Tomasulo joined HealthMap in 2011 as Editor-in-Chief of The Disease Daily. She received her MPH from Boston University where she focused studies on HIV/AIDS in marginalized populations and the relationship between health and human rights. While at BU, Anna worked in Livingstone, Zambia on the prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV/AIDS. She brings journalistic experience to The Disease Daily from her fellowship with the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, where she reported on child marriage in Nepal. Outside of international health, Anna has pursued studies in French and Francophone Literature (MA, Bryn Mawr College 2008), and is passionate about the works of Albert Camus, running, travel, and food.
